Buck spoke with a longtime resident and former student at Mitchell and is able to pass along some additional information on the gym. His source believes the gym was completed in the early 1950’s, perhaps 1953. He was not aware of a playoff game hosted by Mitchell but he did remember a few instances that Spray and Dayville or Monument would meet in a playoff game in Mitchell as MHS was essentially the middle point between the towns.

Guests pulling into the parking lot at the Mitchell high school gym will see a white, weather beaten facility with large blue letters spelling out “Loggers” on the side. Though it could stand a coat of paint, the outside of the gym oozes character and small town charm. It reminds me of one of the gyms the Hickory Huskers would have played in on their way to a state championship in the movie, “Hoosiers.”
The inside looks like a cramped, hot place. With just two rows of bleachers on one side, it gives the impression that it wouldn’t be a comfortable place to watch a game with a big crowd on hand. Like many of the gyms built during that era, the facility features a stage on one end that serves as an additional viewing area when the small bleacher seating reaches capacity.
I love the barn-like pointed ceiling and the support beams looming halfway down the walls. The curved side baskets scream 1950’s to me. The actual floor looks nice if perhaps a tad narrow.
Another aspect I like of Mitchell’s gym (and other gyms) is the flags and banners hanging on the walls honoring the successes of previous teams. It looks like the Loggers took home three Tri-Co League Championships in the early 00’s.
The town of Mitchell was founded in the 1860’s as a stage-stop along the Dalles Military Road one of the most important roads in Oregon history. The Dalles Military Road carried passengers, mail and goods from The Dalles inland to the gold fields and military outposts of central and eastern Oregon. The road passes right through Mitchell’s downtown area.
Mitchell is located in Wheeler County along Highway 26, east of Madras. Highway 207 begins north of town and takes travelers to Highway 19 where they can head east to Spray or northwest to Fossil, Condon and eventually, Arlington.

Thanks to Buck for the photos and his name and photos were used with permission.

Oh Good! I've been hoping to see the inside of that gym since my stop there on the way to Baker City, in which the gym was locked up.
Your assessment of the gym exterior is right on. It's got a classic 1950's old-school, small town look to it. But the town itself has an even older, 1800's feel to it. It hasn't changed much over the past 100 or so years.
Is Jefferson's gym new? Remember, they were a small school power in the late 50's and I would love to see photos of that gym if its still standing!
The current high school (and gym) was finished in 1979. But the old high school, which is now the middle school, was built in the early 50's. Although it's been altered some since being turned into the middle school (the upper bleachers were removed), I can definitely get you pictures!
Whatever you can provide would be awesome!
Hope the season goes well...
I played grade school basketball in that "old"? gym in the early '60s.(We played Kinzua, Dayville, and Monument) It had an auditorium where the grade school graduation was held. Can't remember much about it. The old school burned down a couple decades later. It had the grade school on the first floor (2 grades in each room) and the high school upstairs. The gym was a separate building as I recall. The school and residential areas were on top of the bluff, and the business section was a the bottom of the hill, along the highway.
Thanks Anonymous! Kinzua? I have never heard of that one.
I have heard stories of many schools burning down. I wonder why that is.
Did you play HS basketball in the 60's? If so I would love to see if you might be able to help with my district tournament project.

Thanks!
Kinzua's story mirrors that of Valsetz. It was a company logging town just a few miles from Fossil. The mill shut down in 1978 and the town was bulldozed and/or burned to the ground.
Mitchell used to be almost unbeatable when we had Dustin Cloud,Herb Paul,Tim Misener,Brian Anderson,Henry Pedro,The Jones boys, and the exchange kids back in 02-05 since oregonprepsports.net won't let you go back before 04-05 for 1A I was only able to get the 10 wins in the 04-05 seasons. I believe it was something like 3 or 4 straight seasons without losing a home game. I remember back when the gym was packed whenever Spray or Dayville and Monument or Crane came to town. Now it's hard to get people to come I guessing winning helped bring people. I also wanted to state that I believe the gym holds at the very least 100 people maybe more if you sit on the stage.
I remember those teams. They had a very good run. I always wondered why they could never make it past districts cause i felt they would of had a good shot. How do you think they would compare to the league now or a few years past buck?
Anonymous I think it was just the nerves of playing on a big stage. We were just as good if not better then the teams we lost to at district. Never blame the refs for losing but 1 year we lost to Powder Valley and we never should of. Anyway to answer your other question I think if Mitchell had those teams today we'd easily be at state. But times and teams are different today in the High Desert league. Only Crane and Jordan Valley are legit threats in the state. Spray,Adrian and Mitchell are only good in the HDL. Not to mention the amount of talent that has left the league compared to what we used to have.
Anyway it'd be nice to see Mitchell get over the district hump this year we have a pretty good team this year they just have to play as team instead of 1 or 2 on 5 you know.
You should have seen it when it had fan shaped glass backboards. Those were replaced when one was shattered by a dunk. I think that about about 95 or 96.
